Geekly Goods Box Office Preview For May 3rd Geekly Goods Box Office Preview For May 3rd

03 May , 2019

What's up Geekly Goods fans!  We are back with another Box Office Preview to give you all the weekend releases that you need to know about!  This week gives us a return to Romcoms, a chilling thriller, an ugly animated movie and of course the ENDGAME, again!

Long Shot

First up! Seth Rogen is back (along with Charlize Theron) with another creative take on a long-established genre: the Romcom. And this is crazy, but he’s putting a twist on it! Framing this story around the hopeful presidential campaign of *gasp* a woman (in this case Charlize)!

This is a fantastic cast with a great creative team behind it. Jonathan Levine is directing (remember 50/50, Warm Bodies or The Wackness?) so don’t be too shocked if there is a ton of heart and emotion behind all of the usual Seth Rogan pratfalls. I really do think this will be a very nice movie that a ton of people can identify with. If you’ve already seen Endgame, this could bring a break to the superhero onslaught of the last few months!

The Intruder

Next is The Intruder, starring Meagan Goode, Dennis Quaid, and Michael Ealy and directed by Deon Taylor. This has the trappings of a nice thriller that gives some good jump scares and light entertainment. I do have to say that the critics are NOT being kind here (5.2 on IMDB, 27% on RT, 38 on Metacritic) but I don’t think you should stay away if you are a fan of thrillers! Is it going to change your life? No. Is it going to win any awards? Definitely not ). But let’s be real, not every movie needs to be amazing to be enjoyable and I think with talent like Dennis Quaid and Meagan Goode, you will at least have a good time!

Uglydolls

Last but not least (well kinda least) is Uglydolls. Here’s an animated musical from STX which hopes to bring a little bit of over the top catchy but annoying music for everybody’s little ones to sing. Starring Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas and Janelle Monae and directed by Kelly Asbury (a Disney vet who directed Shrek 2 and...ugh...Gnomeo and Juliet...) this movie is trying to capitalize on a little bit of a desert in regards to youth-oriented films. This movie is not made for me an early 30’s guy, and I’m trying to be as objective as possible but I am not going to lie here, this looks terrible. This feels like a cash grab and the animation and basic story (at least according to the trailers) looks like it is pandering to the lowest common denominator. I will give them credit for actually using musically talented people to voice the characters so they don’t have to fake the singing. I just am really not a fan of these toys being turned into a feature film...was anyone actually asking for the backstory of how Uglydolls came to be?? I seriously doubt it. If you have children under the age of 10, go for it and I’m sorry you have to sit through it, but for everyone else feel free to skip this one.

The Predictions

Just like last weekend, the real story this weekend is Avengers: Endgame.  It absolutely blew the doors off the box offices and soared to almost 1.5 BILLION dollars in the first full week of its run. So the only real question is how high can it go? The big number to watch is $936 million, that’s the domestic total of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and it’s the highest of all time. Endgame is sitting at right around $453 million, can it keep pace to crush the record?? My bet is yes but we shall see! Other than Endgame though, look for Long Shot to bring some nice relief for those who are getting a little weary of all the superhero movies that seem to drop almost every week but it will definitely be hurt by Endgame’s continued success.  The Intruder and Uglydolls shouldn’t have TERRIBLE weekends, but don’t look for anything eyepopping out of them.

Top 5:

  1. Avengers: Endgame (Duh)
  2. Long Shot
  3. Uglydolls (this will probably capitalize on the young market)
  4. The Intruder
  5. Captain Marvel (I don’t know who is still watching this but it just keeps chugging along!)

What do you guys think?  Did I get it right? Did I mess it up terribly?  Let us know in the comments! And as always check us out on YouTube for all the reviews you could ever want and hit us up on Instagram @geeklygoods!
