Geekly Goods Box Office Preview For March 29th Geekly Goods Box Office Preview For March 29th

29 Mar , 2019

Alright movie fans, we're back for another Geekly Goods Box Office Preview! This week gives us a mix of a classic family movie remade, a trippy beach journey (again?) and a lot of holdovers from the last few weeks, so let’s dive right in.

Dumbo

First up is Dumbo, the live-action remake of the classic animated movie. Dumbo is directed by Tim Burton (already a Disney remake veteran with his Alice movies) and stars Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton and of course the adorable and lovable flying elephant, Dumbo. By all accounts, this movie looks pretty awesome. This is a great cast with an iconic director dealing with a pure Disney classic that was begging to be expanded on and given some new life. Sounds like an automatic recipe for success right?  Well, hold on. First of all, may I direct you over to our own Leo Rydel’s review real quick:

Ok, you back?  Yeah, this isn’t what I expected either!  Unfortunately, Tim Burton doesn’t seem to be able to capture the Disney magic here and this whole movie just falls flat.  The RT score shows this too (52% currently) and honestly, the critics haven’t been too kind to this across the board. I think we can safely trust Leo’s word here and know that this isn’t going to be a far-reaching hit for all ages. Maybe the kids will really enjoy it, but man, unless you are a diehard fan it really seems like this is something to miss. It'd be safer to catch this one in the comfort of your own home and save the movie ticket money for something else!

The Beach Bum

Next up is really the only other release that’s really worthy of a full write up. The Beach Bum is a trippy, out of this world...redemption tale? Directed by Harmony Korine and starring Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fischer, Martin Lawrence, Zac Efron AND Jonah Hill? Wait, hold on guys, is this a Wolf of Wall Street reunion or an Oscar contender right out of the gates? This cast is kind of insane and could certainly carry this movie to really big heights. But what are the critics saying?  Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes, it’s at the same level as Dumbo (about 53% currently). Yet as with all things, the devil is in the details!

If you dive into the actual reviews, most of the major knocks on the movie deal with Korine’s style and subject matter but people are enjoying the ride even if the depth isn’t there.  We all remember Spring Breakers and how it polarized audiences right? Well, this one is probably somewhere along the same lines. If you loved Spring Breakers, you will like this movie. If you aren’t a fan of Korine in general, don’t expect him to break any new ground on this one. Please don't bring kids to this movie! It feels like I shouldn’t have to say this? But man, it’s always surprising how many people are surprised when they walk into an R rated movie with children and the movie starts dealing with very adult content.

The Predictions

This is a wide-open weekend for the Box Office. Dumbo will definitely win the weekend, even though the reviews are pretty rough, it just has too much name recognition and firepower to suffer. I will say though, expect that success to disappear next weeknd when word of mouth and anticipation dies down, look for a high 50% drop, and maybe *GASP* a 60% drop.  Not a great start to the onslaught of live action Disney remakes for this year. But after that? There’s a lot of quality movies out there to catch up on! Us has got to be one of the favorites to take second place, and Captain Marvel may stick around to hit up #3.

As a quick tangent, Captain Marvel has been a Box Office Powerhouse! It is by far the highest grossing movie of the year and it’s really setting up Marvel for another year of crazy dominance. Not to look too far ahead, but Avengers: Endgame is projecting at around $800 Million worldwide FOR. THE. OPENING. WEEKEND.  I think it’s pretty safe to assume this will be the highest grossing of all time and it’s looking like it won’t even be close! Essentially Disney is controlling the box office for the next 3 months? I’m not trying to dismantle the system, but is it about time to start talking about a monopoly? Here are my predictions for the weekend:

  1. Dumbo
  2. Us
  3. Captain Marvel
  4. Five Feet Apart
  5. The Beach Bum

What do you guys think?  Did I get it right? Did I mess it up terribly?  Let us know in the comments! And as always check us out on YouTube for all the reviews you could ever want and hit us up on Instagram @geeklygoods
