Geekly Goods Box Office Preview February 8th Geekly Goods Box Office Preview February 8th

08 Feb , 2019
Alright guys, we are back with another Box Office Preview to keep you up to date on all the newest releases.  This weekend brings a genderbent reboot, a super creepy kid, a much anticipated sequel and a chilly revenge flick. Let’s get into it!

What Men Want starring Taraji P. Henson

This is a clever (sorta?) genderbent reboot of the classic Mel Gibson movie that invited a female perspective to a male chauvinist advertising executive.  I don’t really know who was asking for this movie to come back, but it’s a pretty boilerplate way to bring a movie about sexual harassment and misogyny into the public view.  I am not personally excited about this movie at all, mostly because from all the trailers I have seen it just seems like they play on the most basic male stereotypes and if I want to see that I could just watch a rerun of The Big Bang Theory.  Now, with that being said, Taraji P. Henson is great and it does look like a nice and light rom-com that is being released at the perfect time for Valentine’s day. Do I think this is a super original idea? No. Is it a deep and thought provoking social commentary?  Ehhhhhhh not really. But will it be a cute date movie that you can share a bucket of popcorn over? I’m pretty sure it will be! Just don’t expect anything more out of this one and you will probably have a fun time at the theater.

The Prodigy starring Taylor Schilling and Jackson Robert Scott

So here’s another entrance into the not-so-original category!  Basically a spin on all of the child horror movies (Rosemary’s Baby, The Boy, The Omen, Children of the Corn...I could go on) The Prodigy centers on a son who is super intelligent and apparently evil. Oooooooooo spooky!  I don’t know, this seems like a film that is being dumped in the middle of February because it can’t cut it around Halloween and I am always skeptical about that kind of release. There also seems to be a growing trend of releasing horror movies around this time and hoping to cash in on cold weather and people that like to be scared (Get Out is a great example of how to do this correctly).  I just could not care less about this release and honestly I don’t think you should either (I’m hoping that isn’t too harsh). I just need something more out of my horror movies these days than a classic trope that’s been done more than a few times already. As they say over and over in the promotional material “There’s Something Wrong With Miles” Well, there’s something wrong with this movie too.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Starring Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett

When the first movie came out I was about as cynical as anyone could be.  I grew up loving Legos and could not believe that the stupid studios would commercialize my favorite childhood past time.  Damn you capitalism!! Ohhhhh man I could not have been more wrong!! Lord and Miller (the directors) brought a beautiful, creative and loving homage to childhood and imagination in general!  And guess what? This sequel will not be any different! From the reviews and the word on the street (yes I have some sources) this movie meets all the hype, even if it doesn’t outright beat the first movie.  Whatever age you are, this movie is a must and I personally guarantee you will laugh, cry, feel feelings and all the good stuff or I will give you your money back! Ok, Leo told me I can’t actually give anyone their money back for legal and financial reasons, but come on this is going to be great!.  Plus, I wouldn’t doubt that there’s a song that will get stuck in your head for a month, so that’s good too. Also, if you want a little background on The Lego Movie and Legos in general jump over to our YouTube page and check out our Brief History of Legos!

Cold Pursuit starring Liam Neeson and Laura Dern

Oooooooo boy, man you gotta love the controversy from a press tour. Regardless of your opinion on this movie, Liam Neeson got himself into hot water this past week by telling his own personal revenge story that is super racially motivated and if you haven’t heard about any of this, well here’s a link: www.vox.com/2019/2/8/18212117/liam-neesons-racist-comments-denial
This has sparked a pretty heated debate and it’s still going on.  My personal opinion is that Neeson had a very toxic emotional response to a tragedy that his friend went through and had a completely inexcusable response.  However, if you can believe him, he has undergone a long process of healing and counseling to right his thought process (it happened about 40 years ago). I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt that he has grown and changed, but I don’t know this man so I can’t be 100% on anything here. Please chime in and let me know how you feel in the comments, let’s just keep the convo constructive.

Ok, now on to the movie. The reviews have been excellent and a little surprising to be honest.  The logline reads like a crappy Steven Seagal direct to DVD movie but hey, if you take that story and add some real acting talent, a slick director and a decent writer, you got yourself a pretty awesome revenge flick!  People are also talking about the gallows humor and the Fargo keeps coming up as a comparison (in terms of humor at least) which I find extremely doubtful, but I’d love to be proven wrong! Look, bottom line, if you aren’t offended by Liam Neeson’s comments (I know it offended a lot of people) and you are looking for a fun action and revenge story this should cover it.

Note from Leo: Choose this one at your own risk. While I wasn't necessarily heavily offended by what Liam Neeson said, due to the fact that he did not perform said actions, I personally will not be seeing this film. I also will not be supporting it or endorsing it in any way shape or form. We present you with the information on this movie simply to keep you up to date on what's coming out, but I will not be supporting the film after what Neeson stated this week. 40 years ago or today, it's not okay to be on the hunt for Black men and as one I will not be seeing this. Doesn't mean I won't watch other films of his, though!

Top 5:

  1. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
  2. What Men Want
  3. Cold Pursuit
  4. The Prodigy
  5. The Upside/Glass

This week’s #1 movie is a pretty easy task.  The first Lego Movie absolutely crushed the box office and the sequel should be no different due to its wide as possible appeal.  After that it gets a little more tricky! What Men Wants probably won’t have a huge box office total over it’s theater run, but opening weekend could also surprise just like Girl’s Night did.  Cold Pursuit is definitely going to be hurt by Neeson’s controversial comments, but maybe not as much as everyone thinks. Who knows, the news cycle moves so quickly these days that many people may forget entirely!  Either way, it should have a strong opening weekend and carry that through for a few weeks. As with almost any horror movie opening weekend, The Prodigy should do ok (especially compared to its budget) but don’t expect this one to stand out or to stick around for long.  And rounding out the top five is a bit of a cop out on my part. Honestly, either Glass or The Upside could come in pretty decently, and one of them should have a good little addition to their box office cume.

Streaming/Sleepers:

Future Man:

Man, I just really enjoy this show!  It’s a great little twist on the traditional time travel story where people from the future (with no knowledge of our time) come back to stop an apocalyptic future.   Honestly, this show should be called Meta Man because there are soooooo many gaming/movie/nerd jokes that I really appreciate. The entire James Cameron episode in the first season is just perfect, I don’t want to give anything away but you’ll see what I’m talking about.  Also, Josh Hutcherson (remember him from The Hunger Games??) does a really good job here. He doesn’t blow you away, but man he is perfect for the role. Check out Season 1 and 2 on Hulu!

Friends from College:

So you may have missed this one from Netflix, it has snuck under the radar a little bit and doesn’t seem to show up in everyones recommendation queue.  Here’s a hilarious and emotionally tough show from Francesca Delbanco and Nicholas Stoller that you never knew you wanted. First of all, the cast is alarmingly great.  Keegan Michael Key, Colbie Smulders, Fred Savage, Billy Eichner, Nat Faxon, Annie Parisse and Jae Suh Park are all FANTASTIC! This show is funny, gut wrenching, awkward and most of all real. This feels like the show for everyone that thought Friends was too corny and a terrible representation of what living in NYC was really like. I think I burned through the first season in one night?  And then tried to space out season 2, but that only lasted a couple of days too. Just check it out and I dare you to not get hooked! Check out both seasons on Netflix.

Big Mouth:

Woooooooo!  It’s back! Well but for one episode at least.  The most raunchy, hormone filled, awkward, coming of age, teen animated show is back for a Valentine’s Day, wait...Valentime’s Day special (watch the trailer if you don’t believe me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfxrhcuwB2o).  If you haven’t seen this show at all, STOP EVERYTHING AND BINGE!!!!  If you have, you know what to expect and I could not be more excited to see more of the hormone monsters, the shame wizard and whatever else these guys can throw at us!  This is streaming now on Netflix!

That’s all for this week!  How’d I do? Did I nail it, or am I completely wrong?  Let us know in the comments below!
