Geekly Goods Box Office Preview December 14th Geekly Goods Box Office Preview December 14th

14 Dec , 2018

Alright everybody, new movies are dropping this weekend and mannnnn is it a good one!!  There’s a little something for everyone so without further ado, here are the new releases for the weekend!

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Forget Tobey McGuire, Forget Andrew Garfield, and you can at least put Tom Holland on hold for a second.  This is the Spider-Man movie we have all been waiting for! In a super family friendly animated format and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Lego movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 & 22 Jump Street) this movie has got it all and should be the clear cut winner for the weekend.

Essentially, this combines a ton of fan favorite alternate Spider-Men (and women!!) to fight a foe that threatens not just our universe, but every universe too!! This is a no brainer and should honestly be viewed the same way that a Pixar movie is viewed. It’s family friendly, funny, action packed and definitely brings some emotions out. Not sure who all these Spider-folks are? Head over to our YouTube and find out everything you need to know! If you want to just cut right to the chase, you can also check out our review too!

Mortal Engines

Here’s a movie that feels like it should have come out 5 years ago.  Mortal Engines is an adaptation of a very popular YA book series where the world has been destroyed by war and cities are now mobilized on giant wheels so they can chase resources around the world.  It’s directed by Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings fame) and stars a great young, up and coming actress Hera Hilmar (Two Birds, Anna Karenina).

Unfortunately, the critics have been VERY unkind to Mr. Jackson (insert Outkast joke here) and this movie does not seem to live up to the book’s hype.  I mean the book is always better amirite? If you are a fan of the book series, you gotta check it out though. The visuals are going to be fantastic and all of the actors do a pretty good job! I think the main issue is that it is just too complex of a story and setup to really translate easily to film, but if you already know the story you should be good to go!  If you have never heard of the series until the trailer dropped? Well, I’d say hold off until it hits a streaming service.

The Mule

Clint Eastwood’s newest film chronicles the journey of an elder drug mule working through Michigan.  It’s tense, the DEA gets involved and they all try to take down a Mexican Cartel together! This looks really quite amazing and Clint’s directing and acting skills are once again put on proud display.  The movie also boasts a pretty amazing cast, Bradley Cooper, Taissa Farmiga, Michael Pena, Laurence Fishburne, Andy Garcia...the list keeps going on!! It’s going to be hard to miss with all of those pieces.  But can I ask real quick, how old is Clint Eastwood?? I mean seriously, this guy has been insanely productive forever! And there’s no surprise here, he is directing AND acting in this one...again!!! Does he ever run out of energy?  I prefer to think he is immortal and is sent to us from an alternate cowboy movie dimension but that’s something for another blog post.

Anyways….This is clearly much more adult than some of the other films coming out this week so if you aren’t hanging out with a younger crowd you gotta check it out, I think Clint’s cinematography will play really nicely in a theater so you might not want to miss it!

Once Upon a Deadpool

'Tis the season for a cash grab, fa la la la la la la la la.  Here’s a movie I’m not super excited about and it’s not because I don’t like Deadpool!!  I actually love it and he holds a special place in my comic fandom but this...I don’t know about this.  For those of you who haven’t been tracking this movie, they went back through Deadpool 2 and recut it as a PG-13 movie with a little bit of extra footage.  Deadpool 2 is great, but what makes it great is the raunchy, carefree R-rated humor that Ryan Reynolds delivers so well.

I guess if you have a son or daughter that didn’t see Deadpool 2 when it came out this is a great opportunity to see it without all the swears!  And as cynical as I am about this, I have to give a ton of credit to Fox here, $1 from every ticket sold will be donated to F*** Cancer, a fantastic charity dedicated to eradicating cancer through research so you can definitely feel great about seeing this movie no matter what!

Oscar Flix: The House the Jack Built, Vox Lux, The Favourite, If Beale Street Could Talk

There’s a whole bunch of Oscar movies continuing their slow rollout and if you happen to be lucky enough to have them in your city, you should definitely go see them!  Not only will you be super cool and have a head start on the Oscar buzz, you can totally talk down to all your friends about how film snobby you are! Double Bonus!

Stu’s Bold Predictions:

  1. Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse
  2. Mortal Engines
  3. The Grinch
  4. Ralph Breaks the Internet
  5. The Mule

Spider-man is the obvious favorite for the weekend. Between the Marvel mania that is everywhere and the brilliance of Lord and Miller, there is no way that any other movie even comes close.  I’m betting it even overperforms all tracking and has a spectacular web swinging time at the top. Mortal Engines should have enough steam power from fans of the series to drive a decent opening weekend, but after seeing the reviews, this will not last long and should die out after this weekend.  The Grinch and Wreck It Ralph should also hang around with some solid takes, is there ever a time that family animated movies don’t do well?? And rounding out the Top 5 is Clint Eastwood’s The Mule. That cast and Eastwood’s legacy should bring some people out for sure! As for Deadpool, I think it will have a solid enough weekend, but I feel that it will be mostly reserved for diehards and the few people that didn’t already see it so I don’t think it will crack the top 5.

Leo's Predictions

  1. Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse
  2. Mortal Engines
  3. The Grinch
  4. Once Upon a Deadpool
  5. Ralph Breaks the Internet
