Halloween has passed and we are definitely creeping towards the Holiday movie season! This weekend has some really cool, bloody and possibly earth-shattering releases so let’s dive in!

The Grinch

Let’s start with what appears to be the favorite for this weekend.  We are getting another reboot (this time it’s animated) of the classic Dr. Suess book with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the titular Grinch.  This is coming from Illumination Studios (of Despicable Me, Minions and Life of Pets fame) so you can expect it to be fun for the entire family.  Besides the obviously incredibly talented Cumberbatch (Smaug’s voice anyone??), the voice-over cast is just top notch with Pharrell narrating the story, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson and even Angela Lansbury making a contribution!

What I am excited for:  This is kinda no-brainer here guys, this is the family movie kicking off the holiday season and it looks GREAT!  The animation is top notch, the jokes are going to be funny and the soundtrack looks like it has done a great job of blending the musical flavor of the original animated special with hip-hop and current pop music.  Don’t be surprised if there’s a toy from this movie at the top of everyone’s Xmas lists!

Leo: And let me tell you, it’s GOOOOD! Tyler the Creator does an EXCELLENT job on a Grinch remix, and Benedict Cumberbatch is a HILARIOUS Grinch! We did A Brief History of The Grinch for you, check it out below:

The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story

The Dragon Tattoo Series returns with a new Lisbeth Salander played by Claire Foy. And I’m going to be really honest here, I had a ton of doubts when this was announced and even though the first few trailers. BUT! This seems like a solid entry into the series. The action seems to have been ramped up, and this feels like it is heading more in the direction of Atomic Blonde rather than the slow burn of the first few films.

What I am excited for: This could be the first step towards a fully realized female James Bond kind of series with some real edge.  I am also really excited to see Claire Foy in an action role as she absolutely crushes The Crown and should bring that top tier acting ability to the series.

Overlord

In the days leading up to D-Day, two American soldiers go behind Nazi enemy lines and discover some crazy happenings in an underground bunker.  Look, I have been trying to stay away from any spoilers, but this is essentially a World War 2 zombie movie with a lot of flair. J.J. Abrams is producing and we all know his track record for bringing awesome content to the big screen.  The cast is relatively unknown but Jovan Adepo (From Fences, The Leftovers, and Mother) is a major star in the making. Expect him to be on everyone’s hot list soon.

What I am excited for: Zombies, Nazis, and... zombies.  Again, let’s not overthink this too much guys, if the family film isn’t your genre this weekend, this is your movie!  I can’t wait to see what the twist is and all the zombie kills!! It’s a little funny that this is being released after Halloween, but I can almost guarantee this will be a Halloween/zombie classic for a long time!

The Front Runner

Hugh Jackman stars in a true story chronicling the rise of American Senator Gary Hart, a Democratic presidential candidate in 1988, and his subsequent fall from grace when media reports surfaced of his extramarital affair. Directed by Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno, Thank You For Smoking) this is an automatic Oscar entry and should be a tense, gripping political drama.

What I’m Excited For; Hugh Jackman. Let’s be real, he’s been out of the “serious” acting game for a little while (sorry Logan fans) but he certainly has the chops to take this role and make it epic. This also seems remarkably timely with all the scandals that have been very public lately.

My Top 3 Prediction:

  1. The Grinch
  2. Overlord
  3. The Front Runner

Leo’s Top 3 Prediction:

  1. The Grinch
  2. Overlord
  3. Girl in the Spider’s Web

The Grinch is the obvious frontrunner this weekend, but don’t overlook Overlord! The Front Runner might not be at the front, but I think Hugh Jackman and Jason Reitman's star power will propel this into the top 3. As for The Dragon Tattoo? I just don’t think this series is popular enough to crack even the top 5 (Halloween should still stick around) BUT! I do think it has legs and will be way more successful than most people think.

What do you think guys? Am I right? Am I way off? What movie are you excited to see this weekend?
