Geekly Good Weigh In: Red Dead Redemption 2 Geekly Good Weigh In: Red Dead Redemption 2

06 Nov , 2018

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a NON-STOP load of fun! The landscapes… the Old West theme… the horses… the gameplay. Honestly, it’s rare that I say this, but Red Dead Redemption 2, in my eyes, is perfect.

There’s so much ground to cover in the game. Personally, I’ve clocked about 50 hours on the game and I’m only on chapter 3! You get access to a vast land of budding Western towns and landscapes. Thousands of characters, features, animals, weapons, and quests make the gameplay endlessly fun.

But let me wipe off my nerd drool… in honor of Red Dead Redemptions star-studded gaming experience, we’re weighing in on some of our favorite characteristics of the game. We promise we won’t be cliche, sorta.

Best Cutscene So Far

Leo's Pick: Arthur Morgan and John Marston

So this is a tiny spoiler, John Marston appears in the game as a member of Dutch’s gang. I LOVE the mission in chapter 2 where you get to work side-by-side with the main character of the first game! Do you ruin your reputation in Valentine…? Sorta, but it’s all worth it at the end of the day. The two badass protagonists of the Red Dead games working together is PRICELESS.

Stu's Pick: Opening Cutscene

Ooooo this is a toughie! Mostly because there are just so many great ones! I think I may have to go with the opening cutscene, and not necessarily for the reason you might think. This game has been so hyped for so long. This is the definition for gaming anticipation and honestly, as soon as the opening cutscene rolled I knew this was going to be an amazing game.  I have been playing this nonstop since the moment I got it (was fully downloaded at launch) and I could not be happier. I know the employees of Rockstar worked their asses off for this and it really shows, and I thank them for it. And side note, whoever put this game as 60 hrs of gameplay had to be sprinting through it. I’m going for 100% completion on this one and there is noooo way I get that in under 100 hrs. It’s just massive and complex and deep, and I hope I can keep playing this game for a long time.

Favorite Weapon Type

Leo's Pick: Shotgun

My favorite weapon type is DEFINITELY the Shotgun. What’s better than being able to close in on the enemy and blow their brains out without a second thought? Nothing, exactly. The reload times on some of the shotguns are far quicker than those in games like these. Usually, those western shotguns are old, clunky, and tough to reload. Here? You’ve got your two bullets back in a double barrel faster than you can say “Wild Wild West.”

Stu's Pick: Dynamite

I’m kinda cheating here, but I have to say Dynamite!!!  Nothing is more satisfying than chucking a stick of TNT into a group of O’Driscolls and showing them how a true outlaw operates!!  Look, it’s crude, inaccurate and can definitely backfire on you but man is it fun! Just make sure to save before you throw it!

But I guess my other answer would be the bow and arrow.  If you craft some of the better arrows, this is a pretty deadly weapon and makes sneak attacks a lot of fun.

Character Honor

Leo's Pick: Good

I have a good character type. I always aim for the route with the biggest honor payoff… yes, that’s much harder to do than it sounds. Having to choose to do the right thing, all the time, as much as possible, AS AN OUTLAW, is ALMOST A NIGHTMARE. There are missions that are DEFAULTED to make you look bad. I kept restarting a mission so I wouldn't become wanted by name if I had to commit a crime I needed my mask! But I want a good outcome for Arthur Morgan and I almost want him to be set up as a heroic outlaw, remembered for his good deeds in the west. My Arthur is a hero.

Stu's Pick: Chaotic Good

Well as much as I wish I could follow Leo’s lead here, I have been something of a bad man in this game!  I generally help everyone I run into, but I just gotta rob some stagecoaches from time to time. Clearly, my bad actions far outweigh my good action, but I think that makes me kinda a Robin Hood/Han Solo type.  For example, so I actually had this one time, where a “lady of the night” in Valentine accidentally killed a guy. Well, she “accidentally” stabbed him through his heart...But whatever! So, of course, I helped her hide the body and get the reward from her!  Buuuuuuutttttt then I kiiiiinda went to the Sheriff and told him what she had done...double reward!! (But double bad honor, worth it!!)

Best Gun Drawing Showdown

Leo's Pick: Billy Midnight

My favorite HAD to be the draw between you and Billy Midnight. He’s the fastest gun in the West (they aren’t joking, either) so you’ll spend 2, or 3, or maybe like… 6 attempts trying to draw your gun against Billy Midnight. Not to mention, you're on top of a MOVING TRAIN. Billy is frantic and nervous, but DAMN this guy is a sharpshooter. Generally, you have some time after you draw, but you must IMMEDIATELY pull the trigger after you get your gun from your holster. Hesitate a second and this guy will put a bullet in your chest.

Stu's Pick: Jamie Gillis

I absolutely loved the mission where you chase the son of your ex-wife. The conclusion ends in a showdown with the son. Now you aren’t supposed to shoot him, of course, but rather shoot the gun from his hand.  It’s just a fun little twist on the game mechanic and I really enjoyed using the showdown mode like this, Mind you, I also loved shooting it out with the old gunslingers, but this just showed me what makes Rockstar games, well, rockstar games!

Favorite Outdoor Activity

Leo's Pick: Fishing

Fishing, of course! It’s refreshing, it’s fun and, just like actual fishing, it’s relaxing. It’s nice to get a quick break and get some hearty fish for use later! Also, the water is absolutely beautiful in the game, a true sight for sore eyes. One of my favorite quests is taking Jack Marston fishing, it breaks the game’s pace for a brief second.

Stu's Pick: Hunting

Leo, I am with you on fishing, it’s just so much fun!  But I have to actually go with hunting right now. Not only is tracking and shooting the animals pretty engaging and sometimes tough, but the crafting payoff is pretty awesome! I finally have been struggling to get those perfect hunts on some of the faster and smaller game. I haven’t really been using deadeye that much, so I should probably break that out so I can get some real crafting on!
