This past Friday, Disney returned to the world of Phineas and Ferb with the release of Phineas and Ferb: The Movie: Candace Against the Universe. The movie features the characters of Phineas, Ferb, Isabella, Bufford, Baljeet, Perry, and Dr. Doofensmirtz with the main focus of the film being Candace. It has been 5 years since the end of Phineas and Ferb, so how does this film stand up with the rest of the series?
The film starts of with a musical number from Candace, who sings about how it is a beautiful day, and then gets angry about Phineas and Ferb making a giant clown robot that juggles the kids. After her mother ignores her, as normal with the shows formula, she sits outside of her house crying. After Vanessa, Doofensmirtz’s daughter, finds Candace to calm her down, the main plot. This happens when Vanessa and Candace get abducted from aliens.
SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT:
After this happens, Phineas, Ferb and the gang try to go the planet to rescue the girls. After Vanessa gets sent off the spaceship in an escape pod, Candace meets the main villain of the film, Super Super Big Doctor, played by Ali Wong. (Before this happens, a character flosses. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Candace then befriends SSBD, and becomes the Chosen One, as her body radiates energy the SSBD wants. Then Phineas, Ferb, and the rest of the gang come to the planet and find Candace, who then asks SSBD to sent them away. SSBD then reveals her true colors to the kids, and sends them to jail.
Then Candace asks SSBD what she wants her energy for, and then finds out that SSBD wants to use the energy to feed her evil plant, who she calls Momma, that creates spores and mind controls the populace of the planet. Candace then finds out she is not special, as the plant only needs CO2 which all humans exhale. She accidentally reveals this fact to SSBD, who wants to now take over the Earth.
After Phineas and Ferb escape the prison, they sneak onto SSBD’s ship and fly back to Earth, in order to make weapons to prepare for the upcoming alien invasion.
I will not spoil the ending, so I will leave it off here.
So, what did I think of the movie? I liked it. There were points that were weird, and took me out, such as at the beginning where Phineas and Ferb search up the planet that Candace got taken to on the internet. This does not work in my opinion as they could have had the boys contact Meep, the alien shown in multiple episodes of the series, instead of them using intergalactic Google.
Some of the animation is off model, but given that some of this film was completed during the Covid-19 pandemic, I will let it slide. The beginning animation looks really different from the rest of the show.
The story is generic and feels like an older episode of Phineas and Ferb (Unfair Science Fair Redux (Another Story)) where Candace becomes the queen of Mars. The film feels more like an episode than a film. With the first film, Across the 2nd Dimension, the story feels like a film. The stakes are higher, and the story has a very emotional ending. While this film does have an emotional ending, it is not as good as the first one.
Even if the story of this film is generic, the songs from this film are amazing. There is a song where Doofensmirtz tells Isabella how he is a better leader than her because of “Adulting.” The ending musical number is a BOP! It is so good. The songs make this film worth watching.
This film holds up, and feels like a good continuation of the Phineas and Ferb franchise. Even if the story is generic, the interactions of the characters and the songs really make this film worth your time. If you have not seen the original series, no knowledge is needed before hand to watch this film.
