Even though Pixar has a film on the horizon, Soul, which is set for a November release, they announced some big news about their next film.
Today, Pixar announced a new animated film, called “Luca”, set for a June 18, 2021 release. According to the official press release, the “all-new film will introduce a boy named Luca as he experiences an unforgettable summer in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera.”
Luca, which is the directorial debut of Enrico Casarosa, will explore Italian culture, just like how Coco explored Mexican culture. The film also will explore magical aspects of the Italian culture; the plot will change because of Luca finding out that his new best friend has a magical alter-ego, a sea monster!
It will be inspired by the director Enrico Casarosa’s childhood, as he was born in Italy and spent most of his life living there. This is not the first animated project for Pixar that Enrico Casarosa has directed. The short film La Luna, which was released before Brave in 2012, was about a small Italian boy and his father cleaning the moon from shooting stars.
Because of his past directorial credit, Luca seems like it will be a great film. I, for one, am really excited for it!
