HBO Max: Everything You Need to Know About the New Streaming Service

The day has finally arrived.

UPDATE: HBO Max is now an option for Comcast customers.

HBO Max is now streaming… or is it? With things like Zack Snyder’s Justice League to hype everyone up for the release, people are flocking to their HBO subscription to change it to Max. But there’s a lot going on that HBO didn’t say anything about, including ALL 8 HARRY POTTER movies, but a lack of availability on all platforms. Are you confused or lost? Here’s everything you need to know about HBO Max.

Who can get HBO Max?

HBO Max is available in the U.S., but not in a lot of European countries nor Canada. This is due to the fact that HBO renewed its agreement with existing international partners for programming and this means that those countries will not be launching HBO Max soon. In Canada, Bell Media runs HBO Canada and its own streaming service, Crave.

While HBO Max is available on devices like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it is currently unavailable on two powerhouses in the viewership industry: Roku and Amazon. These services make up nearly 80%

If you’re a cable subscriber with Comcast/Xfinity, DirecTV or AT&T, you can convert your HBO Subscription into Max. Also, if you’re an HBO Now subscriber billed through HBO, you are eligible to get the Max service.

Here is a full list of who is eligible:

  • AT&T (HBO’s parent company) and DirecTV, U-verse, AT&T TV Now, AT&T TV and AT&T wireless users
  • Charter and its Spectrum services
  • YouTube TV or Google
  • Apple
  • Hulu
  • Altice USA and its Optimum and Suddenlink services
  • Verizon and its Fios services
  • Cox Communications
  • The NCTC group of independent cable and broadband companies which includes WOW!, Atlantic Broadband, RCN, Grande Communications & Wave, MCTV and others.

Any new subscribers can signup at hbomax.com.

How much does it cost?

HBO Max is $15 a month. A preorder special was going for $12 but has now expired. According to CNET, sometime in the future HBO Max will offer a less expensive version that comes ad-supported, but who wants ads?

What features come with HBO Max?

HBO Max has a sleek purple interface that looks similar to the NOW layout with additional “Hubs” for each brand under the HBO umbrella, including DC, Looney Tunes, Cartoon Network, and more. Here’s a first look from our YouTube channel:

They also have a feature for the HBO Max mobile apps to download programming, but it’s unclear how much can be saved to your device.

HBO Max allows users to stream on three devices at once. Other services like Disney+ allows you to stream on four platforms simultaneously, while Netflix gives you the option of one or four.

Unfortunately, HBO Max will NOT save data from GO or NOW. So if you were halfway through Wonder Woman, it won’t start where you left off. And if you’ve streamed all of Game of Thrones, it will not display that.

Unfortunately, HBO Max does NOT currently offer 4K Resolution.

What can I watch on HBO Max right now?

There are plenty of titles. It has powerhouse show hits like Friends, South Park, and , The Big Bang Theory. Cartoon programming like Looney Tunes and Dexter’s Lab is available as well. There is a small anime library from Crunchyroll and The Harry Potter series is ready to stream. The entire DCEU is there with Zack Snyder’s Justice League planned for 2021.

We hope this helps answer some questions you might have on the first day of HBO Max. Let us know if you have any more questions regarding HBO Max down in the comments!
