Venom is here! Finally, we can see our favorite (debatable) symbiote on-screen. But what about the context and the origins of this character? Here are five must-read Venom comics to read before seeing Venom. These will get you up to speed on the symbiotic villain and anti-hero.

This graphic novel ties together many different stories. From an alien war to bonding with Spider-Man, to finding Eddie Brock, “Birth of Venom” is the perfect collection of complex stories that tell the origins of Venom.

Lethal Protector

Prior to this story, in most cases, Venom was a villain of Spider-Man. Venom’s popularity spiked in the 90s, mostly thanks to “Lethal Protector.” In this story, Eddie Brock and Venom operate as vigilantes, vowing to protect the innocent. “Venom” director Ruben Fleisher said that this and “Planet of the Symbiotes” inspired the movie the most.

Maximum Carnage

“Maximum Carnage” is another 90s must-read Venom story. In it, Carnage teams up with other ferocious symbiotes to bring about death and destruction. Venom must reluctantly team up with Spider-Man to put an end to the rampage.

Planet of Symbiotes

Read the 1995 version, this is an excerpt from an updated comic.

In this arc, Eddie Brock questions his relationship with Venom. At the same time, five symbiotes, including Riot, are all attacking the planet. Eddie and Venom must come to an agreement as they take on the Symbiotes with Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider.
